Daydream project artist statement

I’m very fascinated by dreams; the way they can feel so real while you’re asleep, yet seem so ridiculous when you wake up. Each dream is like an alternate universe, somewhere where the world is completely different, or your life is completely different, or perhaps you yourself are completely different.

Sometimes I become so immersed in my dreams that waking up makes me question for a minute if I really was in a different place while asleep. The concept of my animation plays off of that feeling.

The real life videos are meant to signal the beginning and end of the dream. But there’s room for interpretation about which video is the beginning and which is the end, if the fantasy world in the animation is reality and the real life videos are a dream, or the other way around.

That’s the purpose of the question in the beginning of the animation- is it about a human slipping into a fantasy dream world where they are a butterfly? Or a butterfly having a dream that it is in our reality as a human? Overall, I aimed to blur the lines of dream and reality, questioning which is which.
